VA: Tuesday Primary - Vote GOP

Thu Jun 09, 2005 at 12:31:28 PM PDT

VA holds its primary next Tuesday-- the only contested race on the Dem side is for Lt. Gov., and frankly I don't think any of them stand a chance in November.

The GOP races are interesting, however. All three - Gov, Lt. Gov., AG - feature a conservative Republican vs. a far-right extremist Republican. I expect the extremists will triumph across the board. However, perhaps one can go down to defeat, or at least damaged in a closer-than-expected race.

The wackjobs are: Kilgore, Bolling and  McDonnell.
The relatively sanejobs are: Fitch, Connaughton and Baril.

The Post provides a good voters guide.

And if anyone thinks it'll be easier to beat a far-right opponent in November, let me remind you: this is Virginia. The Republican will have the edge, no matter how nuts he/she is. Michael Farris nearly won statewide office, for pete's sake.

Goal for 2006: Suppress the Fundie Vote

Thu Nov 04, 2004 at 07:29:24 AM PDT

Mail flyers to fundamentalist church members from "Gays for a Republican Majority" or whatever and congratulate the president on all his gay and lesbian appointments. "Don't believe the liberal media; President Bush is doing all he can to elevate our GLBT community to the highest reaches of government."

"Freedom of Choice Republicans" can do the same and say "our leaders pay lip-service to the anti-abortion crowd, but don't worry about losing your right to a safe and legal abortion--we control every branch of government and a woman's right to choose is as solid as ever!"

etc., etc.

KE Returns to VA

Sun Oct 24, 2004 at 09:56:13 AM PDT

WaPo reports today that the Kerry campaign is putting $50k into Virginia. Is it just a head fake or a shrewd gamble on a state teetering between red and blue? I'm thinking the latter.

$50,000 isn't much, but it's being spent in rural (i.e. cheap) media markets. And it could be a sign to all us VA volunteers that they know the state is winnable and we should redouble our efforts in this final week.

Story here.

Not only can VA flip this year, I also wouldn't be too suprised if we picked up one or two House seats between Weed, Socas and Ashe.

Report from the Field: Virginia

Sat Oct 23, 2004 at 07:54:52 PM PDT

A long day spent lit-dropping in a very Dem-leaning precinct--2-1 for Gore in 2000--reaffirms my opinion Virginia could shock the pundits on election night. (Oh, how I'd love to watch Brit Hume and Fred Barnes take a bite of that shit-sandwich on live television.)

Tom Shales Column

Thu Oct 14, 2004 at 04:19:03 AM PDT

Tom Shales, WaPo TV critic, has a great take on last night's debate--all should read it.

Over on Fox, though, everybody threw bouquets at Bush, especially that sickening, simpering suck-up Morton Kondracke, who hailed a "much better performance" by the president than last time. Smirking right-winger William Kristol said that of Bush vs. Kerry, "He slaughtered him," a manifestly ridiculous contention.

Can We Make the Sinclair Story Boomerang on Bush?

Tue Oct 12, 2004 at 05:31:22 PM PDT

I doubt the White House cares if this documentary runs or not.

If Sinclair backs down, the issue is out there and once again John Kerry is the story, rather than the failures of George Bush.

If Sinclair airs the documentary, Kerry is the story PLUS all the controversy surrounding it ensures that many more people will tune in than would otherwise.

NoVa Dems -- Help Out This Weekend

Sat Oct 09, 2004 at 08:05:02 AM PDT

This weekend, we are setting up tables at Giant supermarkets and other locations in Arlington/Alexandria, handing out absentee ballot applications.

The smaller the lines are at polling places Nov. 2, the more likely people won't be discouraged from voting. If VA is to go blue this year, it will be because of a massive turnout in Arlington and Alexandria!

Join this Yahoo group for more information and send an email to the group if you can help this weekend: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RegisterArlingtonVoters/

The end of Coburn's campaign

Thu Sep 23, 2004 at 07:33:43 PM PDT

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Tom Coburn, who has been accused of sterilizing a young woman without her permission 14 years ago, now says he has performed similar procedures on "lots" of underage women.

Full story and Donate to Brad Carson

I realize Oklahoma's deep red, but could a Coburn collapse affect any other races?

$100 on Behalf of Sue Niederer and in Memoriam of Seth Dvorin

Thu Sep 16, 2004 at 07:52:05 PM PDT

What happened today in New Jersey was revolting and frightening, and emblematic of just how far off the rails our country has gone.

Since I don't own a TV network or a major daily newspaper, my options for speaking out are limited. So I'm giving $100 to an anti-Bush group tonight--I hope many others here can join me.

I'm thinking ACT, but I welcome suggestions.
